Condition Assessment – Re-use of legacy equipment

Topside 3D scanning task to assess feasibility of using old equipment – Southern Scotland

In 2024, Viewport3 were approached by a returning Norwegian customer who identified a need to assess the condition of a legacy deployment tool. The condition of the unit was unknown and the customer expressed concerns about its suitability for the task at hand, with corrosion, warping and damage being potential sticking points for the project.

With the equipment located in Heartlands, Viewport3 mobilised a spread of equipment which included laser scanning and 3D photogrammetry equipment. Once the access challenges had been overcome, the team set to work collecting a high-detail, high-accuracy virtual copy of the target hardware.

During the site-work, several instances of ‘reportable’ anomalies were detailed to the customer, who requested that additional detail and anomaly grade CAD reconstruction be carried out at the applicable areas, particularly where the anomalies were present in areas that could affect the equipment interfaces.

The project concluded successfully, and the quality of the 3D data collected allowed submission of two fully compliant CAD shapes to the customer. The shapes were issued in a ‘multi-resolution’ manner, whereby the compliant areas were described using suitably file-size efficient data, and the anomalous areas were described using high-detail CAD output which the ‘organic’ nature of the problem geometries demanded.

Client was then able to import the CAD data into their preferred 3D design software package (Inventor) and successfully check interfaces, repair requirements and compliance with original design at the critical areas.
